'Turbulence'

By Michael Joyce

Here it is, one year in the making, a massive amount of hours, dirt, rocks, blood, sweat and a few beers - the much talked 'Turbulence' is complete. The You Yangs may not be the biggest hill but the YYMTB Trail Crew out there have worked some magic. The end result is a fast flowing track that will reward those who can string lines together with some big jumps, drops and step downs to keep you going back for more.

It's the same old start off the wooden start ramp, throw in a heap of cranks, the track doesn't require you to crank as much as the previous You Yang tracks so put your foot down right from the start. Down the wooden start ramp over a small roller into a left hand berm that spits you across the road, Some single track leads you up to a right hand berm that is the junction between Bandages or Glory and Track 10. Once out of the berm you follow the track round a gentle right hand turn and in to a section of spaced out rocks. After this it's a chance to get your heart rate down and enjoy this fast smooth piece of track, just around the corner is a blind rock jump (2 meters). Then off a couple rock steps, throw in a few cranks gap over another larger rock (3 meters) into a double rock garden, gapping in and gapping out is your best option here, it's a rim eater otherwise.

Once out of the garden put in a couple cranks, skip over another rock and hook it to the right in another berm, suck it up and drop off a large rock on to an armoured transition, (1.5 meter drop and 2 meters to the transition) smooth as a shot of cactus juice (B-line to the left) get back up to speed and try to hold it for the next section. Once off the rock drop the track allows you to get up to some insane speeds, off a couple of steps and on some fast trail that leads you up to the old and new track 10 junction. This next section will favour those who can link up lines at speed and hold their flow (big balls or rack may also be required). From the junction its off a super fast rock drop (1.5 meter drop and 4 meters to transition), catch the transition then down into some well placed rocks, get over these without losing speed, straight afterwards you are into an armoured run in off a rock gap it to the transition (2 meters) if you kept some speed and flow, if not you will suffer and so will your time (there are B-lines all through this section).

Now is a section of track that took ages to build and will take you seconds to ride. After the last rock gap it's the run into the step down, milk a roller for some speed and launch off the step down, (7 meters - place dad with camera here), (B-line to the left which is a drop which is NOT rollable, and C-line to the right which IS rollable) you will hit the transition and your face will peel off, it is fast from here on. It will go something like this, hit the step down, touch down on the landing as nice as a cold beer after a hard days trail building, off a good rock step lean it over to the left over two rollers, skip off a rock straight off another rock step, over two water bars, a short run into another rock gap (2meters) and down to the creek gap, (8 meters - put mate who fell off in practice and busted his bike here with camera) you will be grinning.

From the creek gap it is some fast hard pack trail, leading you down the hill into a lightly wooded section, a few small rocks tell you to get ready to veer right, and into the last section of trail to be built. It's a smooth start into some of the boys handy work, over a few flat rocks, over a larger rock, pump it for speed, (peel off to the left for the B-line) continue straight over another rock and straight off a good drop, (2 meters - put your tight jean wearing fixi riding mate here with camera) stick the landing, spin your cranks a few times, pump in and pop off a small rock lip, float over a rocky slab and hit the run in to the bridge jump over Track 7, (10 meters - put mum with camera here) you land smooth as youies koala fur here. Lean it over to the right on a massive berm and you won't need brakes until the finish line now. Out of the berm is the step down, it has been changed and is now bigger with a extended landing so you hold more speed for the two lots of doubles, and you need to, they have both had a face lift, longer gaps and longer landings (8 meters and 7 meters) to keep you from landing flat and to help maintain speed. The last straight in to the hip at the end has also been worked on, new booter and bigger landing, insert your last cranks here and you're done!

2009-2010 VDHS Round 6 You Yangs Race Report

By Motor & Mouse

Saturday

With a smaller turnout than expected by You Yangs MTB, 229 riders showed up for Round 6 of the KONA Victorian Downhill Mountain Bike Series held at the You Yangs Regional Park just out of Melbourne. The word had been out for a while about a new track and this had everyone busting their balls to get a chance to put some rubber down and take the honours. A relatively new comer to the club scene, You Yangs MTB held the race. A new club and a brand new track…. the pressure was on…but pressure makes diamonds baby!

Rain on Friday night and a shower Saturday morning had the track primed and ready for riders to get some lines dialled and get a feel for this virgin track. The word from riders in the shuttle line was that they were super stoked on the track and they hammered transport from the start, this being the case transport worked well, with no one having to wait long for their opportunity to try and tame the track. The track took a hammering and held up to over 1500 runs on Saturday alone. That means transport was moving over 200 riders an hour. Getting the low down from the riders it seemed Saturday was over way too quickly. Anyhow downhillers do what downhillers do and everyone bailed to sink some beers or whatever they get up to at night, to sort it all out for Sunday and get some zeds.

Race Day.

A quick walk Sunday morning revealed the track was rubbered in and a crowd of spectators had moved in to every section of the track from top to bottom. The track allowed riders to put on a good show for the crowd, combined with some tunes coming off the decks the whole scene was set for some good fast racing, a couple more hours of practice for those who hadn't found the measure of the track and then it was on…. The usual pre-race briefing, a minute silence for the fallen ANZACS, Victorian Champions got their bling blue and white race tops and it was qualifying time.

Qualifying runs weeded out those with no dance floor moves - the type who wear tight jeans and love listening to Justin Beiber, this track was all about flow and style. With 16 starters out of a possible 20 registered in the KONA Elite Men the track had claimed a few victims already. Fastest down in the KONA Elite Men qualifying was World Trail's Rhys Atkinson (who must know a few moves) in a time of 2:00.2 which meant he was busting down the hill at 45 kph. He was then followed by Norco rider Jesse Beare, Liam Panozzo in 3rd, local boy and iRide sponsored Ben Davies in 4th and Yarra Valley Cycles Alex Swann rounded out the top five.

In the KONA Elite Women 8 ladies made the trip up the hill which saw Yarra Valley Cycles Leonie Picton qualifying as the fastest woman in front of Yarra Valley Cycles Katelyn Humphries who did well to recover from a pretty nasty crash where her bike came off second best. Props must go out to all her pit crew as she had to lend bits off just about everyone to get the thing going again.

A solid field of 32 TeKin Suspension Under 19's competitors made it to the fort at the top of the hill to throw down their qualifying runs. Aden Wyber coming off winning the MTBA National Series and qualifying for the worlds owned the hill. This did not surprise us after seeing the line that he attempted the week prior at the You Yangs Shuttle Service ride day. With the lack of KONA rider Ben Barrett at the event, Jacob Hunter and Dion Thomas put in solid efforts to round out the top three.

The future of the sport, the iRide Under 17's saw 34 entrants with only 32 making a date with Amanda at the start gate. Dean Lucas romped down the hill to qualify 1st from Mac West-Moore and Trent Piribauer with only 0.7 of a second between the three.

The minor categories were all run and won without to much drama until Kevin Backhouse in the Yarra Valley Cycles Expert Men got slightly off course in 'The Huck Garden'. Marshalls were on the job quickly and racing was stopped for about 1 hour. Our professional paramedics Life Aid were called to the top of the hill were they weaved their magic and got Kev, who was feeling the effects of the crash all over his body, onto the spinal board and extracted him off the hill. Kev then made the trip to hospital, where to everyone's delight; we later found out that there was no major damage. With predictions that Life Aid was going to get a bit of a work out over the weekend, we were quite happy to see this prediction fall well short. This break allowed a shower to pass through and tack up the track for the remaining racers.

The iRide Under 17's then made the trek back up the hill to see Dean Lucas finish 1st and Mac and Trent swapping positions to see Trent take out 2nd and Mac 3rd. A mention must go to local riders Alex Shannon and Angus Jackson who finished 4th and 6th respectively.
Things pretty much stayed the same as in qualifying for the TeKin Suspension Under 19's apart from Aden Wyber going faster (2:04:9), and the other guys going slower. Jacob Hunter stayed in 2nd while Dion Thomas got demoted to 5th and Steven Harris stepped up to claim the 3rd podium position.

Things were as they have been all year in the KONA Elite Women with YVC's Leonie Picton ripping down the hill in 2:29.9 continuing her form to comfortably win over YVC's Tracy Whittaker and YVC's Katelyn Humphries.

In the KONA Elite Men the top five qualifiers were put in the washing machine and came out in this order:

1st - Rhys Atkinson (2:01.7) - World Trail
2nd - Liam Panozzo (2:03.7) - JezKen
3rd - Jesse Beare (2:04.2) - Norco
4th - Alex Swan (2:05.1) - Yarra Valley Cycles
5th - Ben Davies (2:05.7) - iRide

As a whole the event was a great reflection of the Victorian Downhill Mountain Bike Series, well organised and well run. Big thanks to all the event organisers, volunteers, series sponsors KONA, TeKin Suspension, Yarra Valley Cycles, iRide Bikes, Gravity Sports, Berettas Bike Hub, YVC/Evo Cycles, My Mountain, Forte Magazine, Anaconda, Mountain Bike Pics Online and Swearwords. A special thanks to Parks Victoria for allowing the sport to utilise this area and Scott Reidy and Andrea Jones from the Fat Tyre Flyers for your guidance with YYMTB's first stand alone major event.
